GREAT GLEN TO BRETTON WOODS NORDIC ADVENTURE
ATTRACTS OVER 400 SKIERS
BRETTON WOODS, NH - David Chamberlain, of Bethel, Maine, skied to victory
at the inaugural Great Glen to Bretton Woods Nordic Adventure Classical Ski
Race, on Sunday, March 10, at the Bretton Woods Nordic Ski Resort in Bretton
Woods, NH.
Chamberlain covered the 42-kilometer course in a time of 1:48:41, taking high
honors in a field of 415 racers. Rounding out the top three places were
second place finisher Chris Nice, of Hanover, NH (1:52:19), and Nicholas Mahood,
of Durham, NH (1:56:39), in third.
In the women’s race, Amy Caldwell, of Windham, VT, finished first with
a time of 2:14:39. Finishing second was Leslie Krichko, of Ridegefield,
CT (2:14:46), and Ann Rasmussen, of Plymouth, NH (2:22:46), took third place.
A 23 km option was also available. Nate Harvey of Glen, NH took top honors
with a time of 1:17:00. First place in the women’s division and second
overall went to Marilyn Hickey, of Concord, NH (1:18:18). Heidi Henkel, of
Brattleboro, VT (1:21:48) finished third overall. Rounding out the top three
women, Alice Goodwin, of Kingfield, Maine (1:26:52), finished in fourth place.
Finishing second in the men’s division was Jim Wilkins, of Auburn, Maine
(1:30:44), and Jeffery Banger, of Woolwich, Maine (1:31:21), took third.
Originally slated as a point-to-point Nordic Adventure from Great Glen Trails
Outdoor Center to Bretton Woods Nordic Resort, with timed and un-timed categories,
terrain conditions forced
event organizers to move the event in its entirety to Bretton Woods.
A mass start, in clear view of The Mount Washington Hotel’s veranda,
led skiers on a loop along the area’s rolling Ammonoosuc Trail System
and returned them to their starting point for a picturesque finish. Participants
who opted for the 43 km course followed the loop twice. Torrential rains and
wind gusts the night before the event created challenges for grooming and
general trail conditions. On event day, sunny skies and mild temperatures
in the low 40s changed dramatically to temperatures in the mid 20s with clouds
and occasional snow squalls.
“We promised skiers an adventure,” said Race Director Sue Long.
“And that’s what they got. The feedback was very positive and
we’re already planning for next year’s event.”
An awards presentation took place in The Mount Washington Hotel’s Grand
Ballroom after the event. Awards and prizes worth more than $10,000 were presented
to top finishers and bib raffle winners.
