| Set aside a beautiful day in winter, add
snow, the best in cross-country ski equipment, fun instructors, daycare, hot lunch, a fun relay -- then make it for Women Only and you have New England's Ski for Women Day. Sunday's first annual event held at the Holderness School in Plymouth, NH, saw over 260 women join in this day that proved that women of all ages want to get outside and have fun skiing together. Women young and never-old took part in clinics for Never-ever skiers, beginners and intermediates, taught be female instructors who were moms and Olympians. The only thing brighter than the sun, snow and blue sky were their smiles, as everyone had a chance to learn to ski better in a supportive environment . Industry representatives from every aspect of the sport- Fischer, Rossignol, Madshus, Alpina, Atomic, Swix, Yoko/Toko, Patagonia, Ibex, Issis, MSOSport - were on hand provide skis, boots, wax and clothing for demo use and to buy. Kids were entertained inside with certified daycare providers and ski games outside. It was a day of 'men at work' and 'women at play', as dads stood aside with kids and cameras to take pictures, and industry reps waxed skis and provided suggestions on ski flex and length. Lunchtime entertainment was a drawing for prizes ranging from chocolate truffles, ski ties, exercise tops, and knapsacks. When the clinics were done in the afternoon, everyone had a chance test their new skills in a fun, 2-woman relay event. Mother-daughter, oldest-youngest, were just some of the categories that won prizes donated by Pottery. This year's event was the inspiration of Trina Hosmer and Anne Donaghy, who had seen the success of similar events in Anchorage, Alaska and Lillehammer, Norway. The amazing success of New England's Ski forWomen day, however, was due to the women who put aside a day for themselves to enjoy and improve their cross-country skiing, and to spend a day with friends who shared their love of winter, sport, and the out-of-doors. |
