There's an old joke that ski coaches like to make, "If you want to ski fast the first step is to pick good parents"... It's true that to be an elite endurance athlete you need the genetic gift of being able to absorb massive amounts of oxygen (VO2Max). When you see a seven-foot tall basketball player you know that he's a genetic outlier, but when Kris Freeman walks down the street he looks like an average guy (assuming he has his shirt on). So, how do we measure how good a job you've done picking your parents?

I have found though that in very cold conditions discrepancies in people’s skis are often huge, despite how “simple” everything seems. Read on to learn how, why, and what to glide wax in cold conditions.
