Resources for New Nordic Skiers
Learn2ski is an interdisciplinary program with the goal to attract, educate, and maintain interest in recreational and fitness directed Nordic skiing. This will be a cooperative effort of retail stores, ski clubs, touring centers, and ski industry corporations. NENSA will be a centralized resource and coordinator of information and resources for learn to ski clinics throughout the New England region. Clinics offered will consist of skill levels of 1-3 in skating and classic technique. These are designed to meet the technical needs of new to intermediate skiers. NENSA’s website will have informational resources for new and returning skiers divided up by geographic region, a one stop resource to develop, access, and unite Nordic ski community resources. Visit frequently for updated information on clinics to participate or help teach.
How to Get Started?
You have your skis, just picked them up at the shop, ski swap,
or re-discovered them in your garage when your kids were trying to spear each
other with the poles they found. What do you do now? If the snow isn’t
on the ground yet get familiar with your equipment. Put your boots on, find
a place with some open area and get used to putting your skis on, taking them
off, and standing on them. If you are really motivated you could even do some
easy Drills and Exercises to better prepare yourself for your first day on
skis.
What do I need?
To start skiing you need:
- Equipment
- Trails
- Clinics/Instruction
Where can I ski?
The best place to start out is on groomed trails. Click on Touring Centers &Trails to learn about touring centers and trails in your community or in areas you plan to visit. For regular grooming, easy access to teaching resources and amenities touring centers are a great place to start. If you don’t have one in close proximity local/club based trails are a great alternative. When Winter is upon you don’t wait for snow find it! In New England there is always snow somewhere, many times you will find it is just a short drive away.
Getting On Snow
The fastest and best way to learn how to ski is through instruction. Learn2ski Clinics and Touring Centers are your resources. The best approach is to attend 3 or more clinics to develop your skills and have individualized lessons. Practice makes perfect so make sure you take the time to practice what you learned a few times (or more!) between lessons. Like anything, practice make perfect, coupled with instruction your efficiency and enjoyment of the sport is going to really take off!
