NENSA's Coaching Education Philosphy

There are many resources available to coaches and athletes looking for guidance in planning. Training plans from all over the world have been published and distributed. All emphasize the importance of consistency, and per iodization in planning. All are valuable resources, and can lead to good results under the right circumstances. However, there are many factors involved in the development of a ski racer, and many of these factors vary from individual to individual. No single plan will work optimally for everybody, or is even likely to work similarly for two different individuals. The development of an effective training plan is a process that requires an understanding of as many factors as can be identified. The NENSA education curriculum offers coaches an opportunity to expand their knowledge and develop tools to improve their coaching skills.

How do I become a NENSA certified coach?

Level 1 certification:

  • There are two "Gaining the Edge" clinic modules that coaches are required to attend.  Module One is Technique and Basic Physiology. Module Two is Strength and Communications Skills. Both of these modules are offered several times a year and can be found on the NENSA online calendar.
  • Upon completion of both clinic modules you will receive a Certificate of Recognition and be listed on the online coaches database.  Certification is valid for three years. If you wish to continue your certification or become re-certified, one of the following is required:
  1. Attend a Gaining the Edge Clinic
  2. Attend a coaches conference
  3. Write an article for NENN (New England Nordic News) or for the NENSA website
  4. Submit date and name of the fulfilled requirement to Janice Sibilia at janice@nensa.net

Level 2 Certification:

  • Passing of a written test is required to become NENSA Level 2 certified. The NENSA Coaches and Training Resource Guide and the NENSA Level 2 Manual are the reference materials needed to take the test. These are available through amazon.com and createspace.com and can be found on the NENSA online store.
  • Upon passing the test, you will be notified of your Level 2 certification and will receive a Certificate of Recognition and be listed on the online coaches database.  Certification is valid for three years.
