A Success Chart is a great aid in motivating young skiers.
It is also an excellent way to provide a self-paced, structured
curriculum for your BKL children. Please keep in mind as you read
through the directions below that every clubs Success Chart
will be different. You may find the NENSA BKL Bill Koch Manual (available
in October, 1999) to be an excellent resource in assisting you in
drawing up your chart. Attached are worksheets to help you with
this project.
How To Make A Success Chart
Materials:
posterboard, yardstick, magic markers
Steps:
1) Determine what items you want to have in your checklists. Everyone
will probably want to have some basic safety and equipment care
competencies. The same goes for skiing skills-- we are all looking
to see kids master the same basic skills (see BKL Manual). But there
are many avenues on which you can branch out:
-fitness areas, eg, push-ups, situps, or dips
-dryland hikes (tailor these to where you live)
-dryland and ski games
-racing results or merely races completed or races watched
-touring (tailor these to specific trails and backcountry areas
where your club meets
In short, you are only limited by your imagination. Just make sure
to include to many fun checklist items and maybe even a few silly
ones
2) Leave a header on top for 4-6 categories, eg, Fitness, Skills,
etc. and a footer on the bottom in which you create your checklist
of competencies. If you are running out of room you can always post
your category checklists on pages you post below.
3) Create a grid of boxes approximately 1/2 x 1 into
which checklist numbers will be written as each child masters a
specific item
4) leave a 1/2 x 4-5 grid section for skiers names
5) Post your chart at a height convenient for kids.
6) Use from dryland onward... and have fun!!
Note: Clubs consisting of juniors/seniors/masters may want to create
their own charts to track training activities and racing results
